Colored towels? Yikes. If you cant pretreat individual stains, use the hottest water possible. Add boiling water from the stove to the washer if you have to. Add double the amount of detergent you would usually use. Use a strong powder detergent like Tide or Foca. Agitate for about two minutes then let soak in the soapy water for thirty minutes. Rinse in warm water. Do not put in dryer until oil is gone.
Hot water is best for getting oil out, but it also can fade deep colors. Too bad. You can also treat spots and stains with denatured alcohol (from the hardware store).How to get cooking oil completely out of towels?
I filled the kitchen sink with hot water and Dawn dishwashing liquid (a very generous amount) and soaked my kitchen towels, rinsed them a bit, then put them in the washer and washed in hot water. I added white vinegar to the final rinse. It helped a little, but didn't completely remove the smell, so I bought new towels. I can't stand that smell and it gets into anything else that might accidentally get washed with the stinky towels.
