Is it OK to use cooking oil to lubricate a bicycle chain?

I was under the impression that its not.Is it OK to use cooking oil to lubricate a bicycle chain?
It's probably not the best bet.

Stick with the spray on chain-lube they sell at walmart/kmart instead. You don't necessarily have to go to a bike shop.

It is designed to stick to the chain and keep it lubed up - but not be as sticky, so dirt and stuff doesn't build up. Depending on how much you ride, and the conditions you ride in, you should occasionally soak your chain to get dirt and stuff off of it (I usually use carburetor cleaner for some reason), slap it back on and give it a good spraydown with the lube, and you will get more life out of your chain. Is it OK to use cooking oil to lubricate a bicycle chain?
Only If you have nothing else, a rusty chain will cease up and the links wont flex similarly if you use this oil too frequently it will attract all the dirt, grit, dust etc and eventually fail in some way.

Keep your cooking oil for the Kitchen I say, but by all means use it if you have absolutely nothing else.
Old saying; In a pinch the wrong lube is better then no lube.

But veggie oil is not a good choice for long term lube.

There are plenty of petrolium based oils that work well for bike chains.
If for no other reason, cooking oil is not a good idea because it is too viscous (thick). Bicycle chains should be lubricated with a light machine oil, not as light as sewing machines perhaps, but closer to that viscosity.
