Why is it not a good idea to throw used cooking oil or grease down the drain?

My sister thinks this is ok, I disagree. but i'm not sure why.Why is it not a good idea to throw used cooking oil or grease down the drain?
water and oil dont mix well to answer that the best way possible when you poor oil or grease it become chunck of glumps and makes water harder to travel causing water to sit and rust your pipes then you end up with a clogged sink never use liquid draino for this the chemicals make thing into hard rock forms est way is to poor liquid dish washer and hot water for at least 3 minutes and so.Why is it not a good idea to throw used cooking oil or grease down the drain?
what do you get when used oil is left on the cooker on the floor on the work top it dries and gets sticky this will build up a blockage down your drain. but there is an answer pour washing up liquid into the cooking oil until it lathers up! non sticky and no greasy sink!!!
It will cause clogs, stuff will get stuck in it. You are right, go forth and gloat.
it's not safe, the oil/grease can solidify and clog the drains. All used grease/oil should be put in a can and frozen until that can is full and then disposed of in the trash can.
It can clog up the drain in the kitchen sink, instead pour the grease into a metal container for reuse or discard it in the trash.
When it cools it clogs up the drain. Here's an idea my mom used to do. Get an old soup can and pour the bacon grease or fat from hamburger meat into it and add some seeds like sunflower or bird seed. Mix it or in layer it. It makes a suet for birds to store up their fat during winter. as far as vegie oil, no clue. sorry.
Cause it could clog the pipes and it is costly to have it taken care of if u dump the grease or oil in the drain immediatly follow up with hot water to help cut thru the grease and oil...
when you put oil and grease and oil down a kitchen drain, it's like cholesterol in the heart and it clogs up the water pipe and cuts down on your water pressure
I was a cook/kitchen manger for 20 years. It can be a bad thing to pour grease down the sink. Even if you flush it down w/ hot water. It collects down ion the pipes and then when it cools off it turns solid. Just like in an unwashed frying pan.

That why restaurants have grease traps outside. You think they would pay for them if they didn't need them?

In a home it's not such a big deal especially if you chase the grease down with hot and/or soapy water.

But they only way you can prevent a grease clog in your pipes is to not pur grease in your pipes . . .
Oil will harden when it cools off and it could clog the drain.

My mom pours her oil in a cup, let it cool off and harden, then she throws it away. I dont like to wait so, i mix cold water with the oil (just to cool the hot oil off.. and yeah, i know they dont mix) then i just pour it in the grass outside. hehe
You are absolutely right! The oil will definitely clog up your sink and pipes and it is costly to have them cleaned out. Throw the oil in the trash if you don't have anywhere else to put it.
Never pour them down a drain. They solidify and adhere to other particles and clog your drain badly.
Oil/grease and water do not mix. Oil and grease both float on water and have a tendency to clump. This causes clogs. Your sister is way wrong.

That said: it is possible to do it without clogging the pipes. Run the water first for a few seconds to get the flow going down the pipes. Then pour the oil/grease in slowly. When you're done pouring leave the water running for a good minute to be sure it flushes the stuff right on out. Just pouring grease/oil into the drain without doing this will cause a clog.
I pour grease down the drain, and have had few problems with clogging. Granted, I don't do it often. People advise against it because if it settles in the pipe under your sink, cools and congeals, it can build up and your sink will clog. I think you're both right: it's not a good idea, but I've done it and was okay!
it will collect and somewhat solidify causing blockage. eventually, you will have a backed up sink and nasty mess! don't do it!!
Well have you ever let grease set in a pan after cooking? it solidfies! and when poured down the drain it will solidify and will clog your drain! I have poured grease down my drains before but will let Hot water (as hot as the tap allows) run down the drain for 5 minutes or so.........
Besides the harm it can do to your sink and pipes, try to consider what it can do to the water-life after your water gets dumped back into the river or ocean. Get a tin can and pour the grease in there, let it harden then toss it in the bin.
You are right it is bad to throw oil and grease down the drain, it will clog up the drain, Leave it to cool down then put it a bottle and hand it to the garbage collectors they will deal with it
Because it doesn't flow down and out like water. It clings to the sides of the pipes and congeals (like after it has been sitting in a cold pan for a while). Eventually it will clog the pipe completely closed and you will have a back-up in your sink and need some Liquid Plumber.

Additionally, the grease that does move on down the line can clog up your septic system because it floats on top and that's can be a REALLY big problem.
when the water is being recycle oil is hard to sperate from the water
It will eventually clog the drains and pipes. If you must pour it down the drain, run plenty of hot water after it.
It cools in the drain and collects, clogging the drain.
